American Association of Orthodontists - Bulletin - JAN/FEB 2004
AAO People Dr. Paul H. Korne of Montreal has been elected president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. Other officers elected are Dr. F. Amanda Maplethorp of Maple Ridge, BC, as president-elect; Dr. Gerry Solomon of Toronto, as first vice president; Dr. Robert Hatheway of Fredericton, NB, as second vice president; Dr. Richard Marcus of Scarborough, ON, as secretary; and Dr. Gordon M. Organ of Mississauga, ON, as treasurer. Dr. C. Moody Alexander of Dallas received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Texas Tech University Alumni Association. Dr. Alexander is a 1954 graduate of Texas Tech and a 1958 graduate of the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, also completing his orthodontic residency there. He chaired the orthodontics department at the Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas from 1977 to 1987. He currently practices orthodontics with his son, Dr. J. Clifton Alexander in Dallas. Dr. J. Henry O’Hern of Red Bank, NJ, received the 2003 Alumni Award of Merit from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He graduated from the school in 1953 and earned his certificate in orthodontics two year later. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics for 50 years and serves as the coordinator of the Orthodontic Alumni Association, which he established in 1953. The University of the Pacific has approved a resolution to name its School of Dentistry in honor of Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni recognizing his 25 years as dean of the school. The accolade will be formally presented during ceremonies the weekend of August 27-28, 2004. Events will include a leadership symposium, a dedication ceremony and a gala celebration featuring Bill Cosby. Dr. Dugoni also has served as president of The American Board of Orthodontics, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Schools and the California Dental Association. He graduated as class valedictorian from Pacific’s College of Physicians (forerunner of the School of Dentistry) in 1948 and has educated and inspired more than 6,000 dental students and countless dental professionals throughout his career. The Maryland Society of Orthodontists has named Dr. Cassiano T.C. Garcia of Townson, MD, as secretary-treasurer. Dr. Kirk A. Speicher of Phoenix, AZ, conducted a drive for clothing, baby supplies and children’s books through his office to benefit the EastValleyChildCrisis Center in Mesa, AZ. The drive was the subject of a story in the PhoenixArizonaRepublic. Dr. Peter J. Theodorou of New York, NY, recently completed two years of active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He served with the infantry in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March through July 2003. His service also included a tour in Kosovo supporting the war in Afghanistan. He joined the Marine Corps Reserve in May 2001, completing five months of basic training before beginning active duty. A combat rifleman and water survival instructor, he received numerous awards, including 2002 Marine of the Year for the 4th Marine Division encompassing 39,000 Marines and Marine of the Year for the 25th Marine Regiment, the 2nd Battalion and G Company. He also received the Navy Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Commanders Award for Excellence. He was awarded meritorious promotion to corporal. Awards to his units include the Presidential Unit Citation and Sea Service Deployment ribbon, both for Operation Iraqi Freedom, along with the National Defense Service Medal and the Kosovo Campaign Medal. |
